Doubao (豆包) became China's default AI assistant — quietly, and through everyone's phone

By March 2026, ByteDance's Doubao (豆包) assistant had 345 million monthly active users — more than China's next two AI apps combined — according to QuestMobile. Built on ByteDance's Seed large model (大模型) and distributed through Douyin and Toutiao rather than ad spend, it shows how an AI assistant wins by riding an existing feed instead of buying one.

Doubao (豆包) became China's default AI assistant — quietly, and through everyone's phone

For most of 2025, China's AI assistant race looked like a three-way tie. Then one app pulled away without a loud campaign.

By March 2026, ByteDance's Doubao (豆包) had 345 million monthly active users — more than the next two Chinese assistants combined, and grown almost entirely through ByteDance's own apps rather than paid advertising.

The number that reframed the race

QuestMobile's 2026 Spring Report, published in late April 2026, put the total Chinese AI-native app audience at 440 million as of March. The top three:

  • Doubao (豆包): 345 million monthly active users, ranked first.
  • Qwen (千问): 166 million.
  • DeepSeek: 127 million.

In a single quarter, Doubao added about 100 million users — roughly 80% of the entire industry's net new users. Its average active rate sat at 33.5%, with users opening it about 55 times a month. By December 2025 it had already reached 226 million monthly actives and crossed 100 million daily actives, the first standalone Chinese AI product to do so.

What Doubao actually is

Doubao is ByteDance's consumer AI assistant, built on the company's Seed (豆包) large model (大模型) family. It is not one trick. Inside the app you get text chat, voice conversation, image generation and analysis, document handling, code assistance, AI search, and — since early 2026 — video generation through the Seedance model that also powers Jimeng.

A phone-assistant mode can operate phone functions with the user's permission: scheduling, information lookup, and cross-app actions. The product positioning has shifted from "answer questions" toward "do the task," the so-called agent turn.

How it got there without screaming

ByteDance's advantage is not model brilliance alone. It is distribution. Doubao sits inside Douyin (the Chinese TikTok) and Toutiao, two of the most-opened apps in the country, so a recommendation or a shared result drops a user straight into the assistant. ByteDance has said Doubao's user-acquisition spend was the lowest of any ByteDance product that ever reached 100 million daily actives — the growth came from the ecosystem, not the ad budget.

That matters because most rivals had to buy their audience. Doubao's path was to borrow one that already existed.

The agent turn

In February 2026, ByteDance rolled out Doubao 2.0, powered by the new Seed 2.0 foundation model, framed as an "agent-era" upgrade — moving from Q&A toward autonomous multi-step tasks. The assistant also became the exclusive AI cloud partner for the 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, one of the most-watched broadcasts on earth; ByteDance said Doubao handled over 1.9 billion AI-related queries that night, peaking at 63.3 billion tokens processed in a single minute during an interactive segment. Those are company-reported figures, not audited.

Under the hood, the enterprise side runs through Volcano Engine (火山引擎), ByteDance's cloud arm. Industry analyst IDC has cited Volcano Engine's leading share — about 46% in 2024 and roughly 49% in the first half of 2025 — of China's public-cloud large-model API calls, ahead of Alibaba Cloud. That enterprise channel is where the assistant's free consumer use converts into paid model inference.

Where the money question sits

Doubao is free to use, with paid tiers added in 2026. The strategic bet is that distribution beats price: keep the consumer front door free and wide open, then monetize through Volcano Engine inference, enterprise agents, and tight links to Douyin commerce. The risk is the one every super-app assistant faces — turning daily opens into durable revenue without annoying the user base that arrived for free.

What readers can do now

  • If you build on Chinese AI, test Doubao's Seed large model (大模型) via Volcano Engine for cost-sensitive inference, and compare latency and price against Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Hunyuan before committing.
  • If you market in China, treat Doubao as a top-of-funnel surface: its reach through Douyin means an AI-answer mention can out-perform a paid post for intent-rich queries.
  • If you follow product strategy, watch whether "agent-era" features (phone control, cross-app actions) actually raise retention, not just demos — that is the real test of the 345-million-user base.

Honest limitations

Core facts (QuestMobile 2026 Spring Report, late April 2026, citing 440 million total AI-native app MAU as of March 2026; Doubao 345M / Qwen 166M / DeepSeek 127M; Doubao +100M users in the quarter, ~80% of net adds; 33.5% active rate, ~55 uses/month; Dec 2025 226M MAU and 100M DAU; Doubao 2.0 in February 2026 on Seed 2.0; Spring Festival Gala 1.9B queries and 63.3B tokens/minute peak as company-reported; Volcano Engine ~46% 2024 and ~49% H1 2025 China large-model API share per IDC) come from QuestMobile via China Economic Net, China.com.cn, NF Daily, and Securities Times, plus ByteDance disclosures.
