A parent in a Chinese city photographs a fourth-grader's maths worksheet. Instead of the answer, the child gets a question back, then a trail of hints. The tutor behind it is not a person and not a search box — it is a model trained to teach.
For outsiders, the lesson of China's education-AI wave is not a smarter chatbot. It is how a regulated, exam-obsessed market turned a large model (大模型) into a daily study tool.
The model built for classrooms, not chat
NetEase Youdao (网易有道, NYSE: DAO) released Ziyue (子曰, "Confucius said") on 26 July 2023. China Daily and Yicai Global described it as China's first vertical large model for education. The name nods to Confucius and the ideal of teaching according to ability (因材施教).
Technically it is a 13-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model (company-stated), routing each query so only a fraction of parameters activate — light enough to run at scale, capable enough for a consumer device. By November 2023 Ziyue was among the first education models to clear China's generative-AI service filing (备案).
The credibility marker came from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (中国信通院, CAICT): Ziyue passed the trustworthy-AI education-model assessment at 4+ level in June 2024 and reached the highest 5-level rating in August 2025.
What it actually powers
Ziyue is not a chat window. It sits inside products a student already touches:
- Youdao Dictionary Pen (有道词典笔) and the upgraded Youdao Dictionary app — AI translation, document translation, AI simultaneous interpretation.
- AI answer pen Space X (AI答疑笔) — scans a complex STEM problem and returns a video explanation with visualised reasoning, not just an answer.
- Hi Echo (虚拟人口语教练) — a virtual oral-English coach with on-screen expressions.
- Youdao XiaoP (有道小P) — an all-subject learning assistant.
Youdao has also open-sourced pieces: the reasoning model Ziyue-o1 (子曰-o1) in January 2025 and the maths model Confucius3-Math (子曰3-Math) in June 2025.
The bet: guided learning, not answer keys
The old "photo-and-search-the-answer" apps (拍照搜题) were barred from giving direct homework answers in China's 2021 tutoring crackdown. Ziyue's pitch is the opposite of a cheat sheet: multi-step guided reasoning that walks a student to the answer.
That fits a regulated market. An education large model (大模型) that explains is easier to defend than one that delivers. Youdao frames the path as moving from "study aid" toward a "virtual teacher" (虚拟老师) — the same north star every tutoring company is now chasing with generative AI.
Where the limits are
Education models still need a human in the loop. On novel or ambiguous problems, accuracy is not guaranteed, and a confident wrong hint is worse than no hint. The 13-billion-parameter spec and the benchmark ratings come from the company and CAICT assessments, not an independent academic audit. And like every Chinese generative service, Ziyue must comply with the Interim Measures for Generative AI Services and the 2025 content-labeling rules.
