# WPS AI turns 80 million Chinese users into a live test of office AI

> Kingsoft Office (金山办公) reports more than 80 million monthly active WPS AI users in China, making its 2025 annual results the clearest read yet on embedded office AI at scale.

Most office software companies talk about AI features. Kingsoft (金山办公) can now point to a number: more than 80 million people inside China opened WPS AI in a single month.

That figure, up more than fourfold in a year, is not a press demo. It is the largest deployed base of embedded office AI that most Western observers have never heard of.

The open question is whether turning a word processor into an AI platform actually changes how 678 million monthly users work — or just how much they pay.

## A quiet giant in plain sight

Kingsoft Office (金山办公), listed on Shanghai's STAR Market under ticker 688111, makes WPS Office, the document suite that ships as the default alternative to Microsoft Office across much of China's government and enterprise world. Its scale is already enormous without any AI:

- **678 million** global monthly active devices at the end of 2025, up 7.29% year on year (329 million on PC, 349 million on mobile).

- **46.15 million** cumulative annual paying individual users, up 10.67%.

- Over **290 billion** cloud documents stored.

- Overseas personal-business revenue of RMB 282 million (≈ US$39.2M / HK$306M), up 53.67%, with 2.85 million overseas paying users, up 63.39%.

These come from the company's 2025 annual report, echoed consistently across multiple brokerage notes.

## The AI number that matters

The headline from that same report is WPS AI's domestic monthly active users: **more than 80.13 million**, up **307%** year on year. Just as striking, the AI service now handles **over 200 billion token calls per day**, a **12-fold** increase in a year.

In other words, the AI layer is no longer a sidebar feature. It is becoming the primary surface through which people touch the product.

## What the money looks like

Kingsoft's 2025 results show a company using AI to defend and extend a stable franchise:

- **Total revenue** of RMB 5.928 billion (≈ US$823M / HK$6.4B), up 15.78%.

- **Net profit attributable** of RMB 1.836 billion (≈ US$255M / HK$2.0B), up 11.63%.

- **WPS 365** (the enterprise collaboration and AI platform) revenue of RMB 720 million (≈ US$100M / HK$782M), up 64.93% — the fastest-growing line.

- **WPS software** (licensing) revenue of RMB 1.461 billion (≈ US$203M / HK$1.59B), up 15.24%, boosted by domestic substitution demand.

The growth mix matters. Consumer subscription is steady; the enterprise AI platform is where the acceleration lives.

## From feature to agent

WPS AI first appeared in April 2023 and entered public beta in November that year, carried on the WPS 365 platform. Kingsoft positioned it not as a model maker but as a large-model **application party** (应用方) — someone who rebuilds office software around models rather than training them.

The 2025 results show the next step: agents. The company launched **WPS Lingxi (灵犀)**, an office agent, plus three specialized agents for presentations, spreadsheets, and documents. It also completed AI upgrades across the four core components of WPS Office and introduced a **Knowledge-Augmented Generation** framework, known in Chinese as 知识增强生成 (KAG), aimed at reliable enterprise use. WPS 365 also integrated an "OpenClaw" capability for automating meeting scheduling, message summaries, and document organization.

## Why this is a real test case

Embedded office AI in the West is still mostly a paid add-on people forget to open. Kingsoft is running the opposite experiment at national scale: put AI in front of hundreds of millions of users, tie it to serious enterprise workflows through KAG, and monetize via subscription tiers.

The risk is familiar. Heavy AI compute costs can outrun the willingness of individual users to pay more for a word processor. Kingsoft's answer is to push value upward into WPS 365 enterprise contracts, where the productivity argument is easier to price than on a consumer's laptop.

That positioning also rides China's domestic substitution cycle, where government agencies and state-owned enterprises are encouraged to adopt locally built office software. Kingsoft says its products now reach about 90% of central government agencies, a base that gives its AI rollout a captive, high-stakes testing ground most global rivals cannot replicate. Whether that institutional depth translates into exportable enterprise AI remains the open question.

## What readers can do now

- **Watch the ARPU gap.** If Kingsoft's average revenue per user climbs as AI tiers roll out, it proves consumers will pay for embedded office AI — a signal relevant to Microsoft and Google.

- **Separate consumer from enterprise.** The 80 million MAU is consumer; the margin story lives in WPS 365's 65%-plus growth and KAG enterprise deployments.

- **Track overseas as the swing factor.** Overseas personal revenue grew 53.67% — small today, but the clearest path to a market beyond China's domestic substitution cycle.

## Honest limitations

This article draws its figures from Kingsoft's 2025 annual report as relayed by Chinese brokerage and financial-media coverage; we did not access the filings directly or audit them. The 80.13 million WPS AI MAU is a domestic-only figure and excludes overseas users, and "monthly active" measures opens, not depth of usage or retention. Dimensions not covered include per-user AI compute cost, conversion rates from free to paid AI tiers, and how WPS AI's capabilities compare in blind testing against Microsoft Copilot or Google Workspace AI.
