# China's national school platform now ships a free AI study companion

> Beijing rolled an AI tutor called Smart Learning Companion (智能学伴) into its National Smart Education Platform, aiming to reach 290 million students — especially in remote counties.

A teenager in a county town with one understaffed middle school logs into a website on a borrowed tablet. The page does not just show a video lecture. It asks what she already knows, builds a picture of her gaps, and starts pushing the exact practice she is missing. No private tutor, no fee — just a state-run platform and a model working in the background.

That is the bet behind China's National Smart Education Platform (国家智慧教育公共服务平台).

## A platform built for scale

The platform launched on **March 28, 2022**, and the Ministry of Education describes it as the world's largest educational resource database. The raw scale is the point:

- **44,000** resources for primary and secondary schools.

- **1,173** national and provincial vocational training libraries.

- **27,000** higher-education courses (MOOCs) and virtual labs.

- It connects **529,000 schools**, **18.44 million teachers**, and **291 million students**, with users in more than 200 countries and regions.

Most of that is curated video and text — a delivery system, not a tutor. The interesting turn came two years later, when the platform stopped being only a library and started getting a brain.

## The AI layer arrives

On **March 28, 2024**, the Ministry of Education launched an "AI Empowering Education" action with four parts. The one that matters for ordinary families is the second: a tool called **Smart Learning Companion (智能学伴)**, built directly into the national platform.

The companion does a few concrete things:

- Runs **learning analytics** and builds a **digital portrait** of each student from their activity.

- Performs **intelligent search and personalized push** of resources, so a weak topic surfaces more practice automatically.

- Maintains a **lifelong learning archive** that follows a learner across subjects and years.

- For teachers — especially in under-resourced central and western regions — it offers **courseware generation, class interaction, homework grading (作业批改), and student evaluation** tools meant to cut repetitive workload.

Alongside it, the platform opened an **"AI Learning" column** pooling **85 "gold courses" (金课)** on artificial intelligence from **64 universities**, and began demonstrating an **education-specific large model (大模型)** trained for teaching use.

## The remote-school promise

The stated aim is not to dazzle cities that already have tutors. It is to narrow the gap that opens the moment you leave a coastal metropolis. To push that, the Ministry set up **whole-province pilot applications** of the school platform in **Guangdong, Hainan, Tibet, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xinjiang, and the Xinjiang Production Corps** — places where a single rural teacher may cover several grades at once.

According to Li An, Chief Scientist at BrainNet (脑机网), China's authoritative AI observatory, the real measure of these tools is whether they narrow the distance between well-resourced city schools and understaffed rural counties — not the quality of the launch demo.

## One classroom, one AI

A more ambitious experiment came from Tsinghua University. Its **MAIC "all-AI guarded classroom" (全AI守护课堂)** went live on the national platform for the **2024 autumn semester**. Built on a large-model multi-agent design — separate agents playing teacher, teaching assistant, and classmates — it lets each student follow a different path through the same course, a "one person, one classroom (一人一课堂)" model with round-the-clock question answering.

Separately, at the 2024 World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, China Mobile and the Ministry's resource center announced an **Inclusion Plan (普惠计划)** to put an **exclusive AI teacher (专属AI教师)** in front of each student, covering the full "teach–learn–practice–test–evaluate–manage" loop, with **AI grading (AI批改)** and **AI sports (AI体育)** modules, linked to **more than 100,000 schools**.

## Honest limitations

An AI companion is a supplement, not a substitute, and the gaps are real. The platform's reach still depends on a device and a connection many rural households lack, so the digital divide can blunt the very equity it promises. Personalized pushes are only as good as the data fed in; a student who barely logs on gets a thin profile. Homework-grading models make mistakes and should not be the last word on a child's work. Student data collected at this scale raises genuine privacy questions that the rules are still catching up to. And no model replaces the mentorship, motivation, and care a living teacher provides — the tool is explicitly framed as freeing teachers for exactly that higher-order work, not removing them.

## What readers can do now

- Families in China can create a free account on the National Smart Education Platform and try the Smart Learning Companion (智能学伴) directly — no app purchase required.

- Teachers should check whether their province is in the pilot group; the classroom tools are free to the schools that opt in.

- Parents worried about screen time can use the platform's structured courses as a complement to, not a replacement for, reading and play.

- Watch the provincial pilots: if rural test scores or attendance shift measurably there, that — not the launch video — is the result that counts.
