# AI turned short dramas into a factory — and the factory is going global

> In 2026, AI cut the cost of making microdrama (短剧) by up to 90% and pushed the overseas market to roughly US$650 million. Kuaishou's Kling (可灵), Chinese Online (中文在线) and Kunlun Tech are leading the export wave — but most titles still never find an audience.

**A genre built for the commute and the bathroom break is being rebuilt by machines.** The cameras have not disappeared. The budgets have. And the biggest buyers are no longer in China.

## How cheap it got

The arithmetic of short-drama production changed in a year. Traditional titles cost **RMB 300,000–500,000 (≈ US$42,000–70,000 / HK$330,000–550,000)** to shoot over 20–30 days. AI-assisted titles now run **RMB 15,000–20,000 (≈ US$2,100–2,800 / HK$16,000–22,000)** in 7–14 days — a cost cut of roughly **90%** (Sohu Tech, industry figures).

Chinese Online (中文在线) said AI cut its multi-language translation cost by more than **90%** and lifted overall production efficiency by **40%**; 3D-animation per-minute cost fell over **75%**. The factory, in other words, is real.

## The overseas number

The export market is where the money story lives. By narrow definition, the overseas AI short-drama (短剧) market reached about **US$650 million in 2026**, up from roughly **US$500 million in 2025** — a jump some analysts tag at **+650%** (industry expert exchange, DataEye). Wider estimates that fold in AI-assisted titles put the overseas AI-inclusive figure above **US$4 billion**, near 70% of the overseas microdrama total.

TikTok's own data shows the pull: in Q1 2026, short-drama creator payouts exceeded **US$24 million**, with April alone above **US$15 million**; AI short-drama payouts topped **US$2 million**, up more than **300%** month on month.

## The flagships

Three Chinese names lead the charge.

- **Kling (可灵), from Kuaishou:** global users passed **100 million by June 2026** (from 60 million at end-2025, +67%), across **224 countries and regions**. Q1 2026 revenue exceeded **RMB 650 million (≈ US$92 million / HK$713 million)**, up over **300%** year on year. By March 2026 its annualized recurring revenue (ARR) was about **US$500 million**, four times the US$100 million a year earlier, with roughly **three-quarters of revenue from overseas**. In July 2026 Kuaishou closed a near-**US$3 billion** financing at a **US$18 billion** post-money valuation (Xinhua).

- **Chinese Online (中文在线) / COL Group:** its FlareFlow platform posted a monthly peak billing of about **US$17.16 million (≈ HK$134 million)**. In Q1 2026, short-drama and IP-derivative revenue was **RMB 411 million (≈ US$58 million / HK$451 million)**, up **108.72%**, at a **48.62%** gross margin. AI short-drama output rose over **300%** year on year; the company targets an annualized capacity of **3,000 titles** by end-2026.

- **Kunlun Tech (昆仑万维) / DramaWave:** March 2026 monthly billing exceeded **US$48 million**, with ARR above **US$570 million**; by June 2026 its AI short-drama platform ARR passed **US$700 million**, and its monthly active users led the overseas short-drama market.

- **Yuewen (阅文)** posted H1 2026 short-drama and AI comic-drama revenue above **RMB 430 million (≈ US$61 million / HK$472 million)**, up **2.3x**.

## The catch: most never break out

Capacity is not the same as hits. Of roughly **220,000 AI short dramas** launched in the first half of 2026, only **1,055** cleared 100 million views — a breakout rate of **0.47%** — and fewer than 10% found any real audience (Xueqiu / DataEye). AI comics were harsher: about one in a thousand new titles broke out. The genre's economics are increasingly split between tool-sellers (the models), platforms (distribution) and makers (who carry all the risk for the thinnest share).

## New rules for a new medium

From **1 July 2026**, China began tiered regulation of AI microdrama (微短剧) by production budget: above **RMB 800,000 (≈ US$113,000 / HK$883,000)** is a "key" title, **RMB 300,000–800,000** is "ordinary," and below **RMB 300,000 (≈ US$42,000 / HK$328,000)** is "other." The thresholds act as a cost floor for premium productions and a filter for the long tail.

## Honest limitations

- **Market size varies by definition.** We used the conservative ~US$650 million (narrow, AI-only) and flagged the wider >US$4 billion (AI-assisted). Pick a definition before quoting either.

- **User and revenue figures** are company disclosures reported by media, not independently audited by us.

- **The "90% cost cut" and breakout-rate stats** come from industry expert exchanges and aggregators, not primary production data.

- **Kling's valuation and financing** are from Kuaishou's announcement as reported by Xinhua; the "US$18 billion" is post-money.

- **FX** approximated at RMB/USD ≈ 7.1, RMB/HKD ≈ 1.10.

## What readers can do now

- **If you produce content, pilot one AI microdrama (短剧) pipeline** on a single IP and measure true customer-acquisition cost against the traditional route.

- **If you invest, separate the layers.** Tool-sellers, platforms and makers have very different margins; the model vendors are currently taking the largest slice.

- **Watch the 1 July 2026 tiered-regulation threshold** as a cost floor — it will reshape which titles get made and which get buried.
